Deluxe Knotless Hay Netting Bulk Roll: 5m x 4m

Our Deluxe Knotless Netting is made from a 5mm thick Braided Polypropylene material and is available in a variety of Mesh Sizes.

This bulk role option is ideal when you have a unique situation (and our premade Hay nets or Round Bales won’t fit the task), we offer our Deluxe Knotless Netting in Bulk sheet form. This netting is not shaped in any way but is rather a large sheet of netting that you can craft to suit your requirements.

No Drawstring is included.

Which hole size should I choose?

If saving on wastage is your primary concern, then 4cm or 6cm is ideal.
If you are wanting to regulate your animals consumption, reduce boredom and save on wastage then 4cm is the most popular and ideal option.
If you are specifically wanting to slow your animal down, reduce boredom and they have some experience with slow feeders, then the 3cm (coming soon) or 2cm would be your best option.

2cm (20mm) Holes:

This sized hole is purely for extreme 'expert level' status ponies that can still manage to devour from 3cm hay nets at quite impressive speeds. Only recommended for horses or ponies that have mastered eating from a 3cm hay net. Lucerne for greedy horses or ponies would be good fed in a 2cm hay net.

4cm (40mm) Holes:

Our 4cm nets are our most common (and popular) size and are accepted by 98% of horses. The 4cm is a great all-rounder that will slow the horses down whilst also saving on wastage. It is therefore the ideal hole size to choose if you are unsure OR just introducing Slow Feed Hay Nets to your horses for the first time. The 4cm hole will slow your horse down, but not so much as to cause frustration. You will reap the benefits of reduced wastage, whilst at the same time providing significant benefits to your horses health.

6cm (60mm) Holes:

Our 6cm nets are primarily designed as a Hay Saver as opposed to being a slow feeder product. It is a popular option for hay that is stalky or not very palatable. Our 6cm nets are great for broodmares, young stock & old horses that don't require slowing down. This size will slow the consumption rate marginally, however more-so it will keep your hay together and minimise wastage.

Other considerations to keep in mind when selecting a hay net size include:

The Weather: You may wish to alternate your mesh sizes throughout the year. You may opt to use a 6cm net (to save on wastage but not slow them down too much) in Winter, but in Springtime a more slow feeding option such as 4cm OR 3cm may be a more suitable option.

The Type of Hay: If your hay is stalky, it would be best to opt for a 4cm or 6cm net hole. On the other hand if your hay is very fine, a 3cm net may suit your horses best.

Weight and health of your Horse: This is a very important consideration as a slow feeder can assist with weight control as well as several other conditions.

Livestock and Other Animals: Our Hay Net range is commonly used by owners of animals “other than horses”. They are commonly used for:

  • Cattle
  • Sheep
  • Alpaca’s
  • Goats

Please be mindful of horns (entanglement) and ear tags that can be rubbed out.

The most common size for these animals is our 4cm net. This size provides some slow feeding whilst also minimising hay wastage. Depending on what you’re trying to achieve (just like with horses), both the 3cm and 6cm varieties have also succeeded in the past.

A 4cm sized net is always the best place to start. You can then go up or down a size if needed.

Caution:

  • Shoes: If your horse is shod then simply tie your net up a little higher if it is a smaller net. If you are using a round bale or larger size net, then put your net inside a large box, hay ring or other device that stops their feet from coming into contact with their hay net. Direct contact of shoes and nets is not recommended.
  • It is not recommended to leave buckled halters or other types of buckled headgear on your horse when using ANY type of hay net as your horse may get caught.
  • Similarly, do not let horned animals such as cattle, sheep or goats eat from the nets due to possible entanglement.
  • Cattle or stock with ear tags are cautioned from eating from the hay nets as they may rub their head and potentially remove the ear tags.

  3. Medium: Capable of holding up to 4-6 biscuits or half a bale of hay. Ideal as an overnight net for stables, yards, and floats.

  4. Large: Full small bale-sized net available. Easy to load a full small bale of hay into. Suitable for stables, yards, and paddocks.

  5. Extra Large: Perfectly fits a 3-Stringer Bale.

  6. Round Bale: Available for different round bale sizes (3x4, 4x4, 5x4, 6x4). Comes in various net sizes (3cm, 4cm, 6cm).

  7. 8x3x3 / 8x4x3 / 8x4x4: Large square bales in sizes 8x4x4, 8x4x3 and 8x3x3. Available in different net sizes (3cm, 4cm, 6cm). Can fit all sizes of round bales.

Knotless vs Knotted

Our Knotted and knotless hay nets are made from UV-stabilized polyethylene netting and have been in use for 8 years. They come in various ply sizes and are tough, durable, and easily repairable. They have been used by many horses and can last 2 to 6 years. Knotted nets are suitable for soaking hay and do not take on the weight of water. They are available in black and offer hole sizes of 30mm, 40mm, and 60mm.

On the other hand, the knotless hay nets are made from high-strength, UV Stabilised polypropylene and have been available since 2019. They are softer and do take on some weight when soaked. The deluxe knotless nets are considered more luxurious and have become popular due to their softness. They are the strongest on the market with 240 ply and come in hole sizes of 20mm, 30mm, 40mm, and 60mm. Knotless nets are also only available in black.

When it comes to strength and longevity, there isn't a significant difference between knotted and knotless nets. Both types have proven to be tough, durable, and long-lasting. While some horses may prefer one material over the other, there is no way to predict which will suit an individual horse better without trying them. Ultimately, the lifespan of the nets depends on the individual horse and usage. Knotted nets have been used for 2 to 6 years without needing repairs, while the lifespan of knotless nets is still unknown after 3 years of use.
